⚠️ Important for existing subscribers

The Basic plan is gone — for new subscribers

Netflix dropped the ad-free Basic plan ($11.99/month, 720p, 1 stream) for new subscribers. Existing Basic subscribers keep the plan for now — as long as they do not switch or cancel.

  • Existing Basic subscribers: You keep it until you actively switch — but Netflix keeps pushing the upgrade
  • Cancel = gone for good: Once you leave Basic, you cannot come back
  • Budget alternative: "Standard with ads" at $7.99 — cheaper than Basic, but with ads

Standard with ads makes sense if…

…you watch rarely, accept 4–5 minutes of ads per hour and Full HD is enough. The cheapest way in.

Standard makes sense if…

…you want it ad-free, Full HD is fine and you stream with at most one other person at the same time. The default for most households.

Premium makes sense if…

…you have a 4K TV, a family with 3–4 streams, or need downloads across multiple devices (tablet, phone, travel TV).

What does one hour of Netflix really cost you?

For the Standard plan at $17.99/month:

Light viewer

≈ $3.60 / hour

5 hours per month

Average

≈ $0.90 / hour

20 hours per month

Heavy viewer

≈ $0.36 / hour

50 hours per month

Rule of thumb: Under 5 hours per month, Standard with ads is cheaper. From 20 hours up, Standard ad-free pays off.
